Glossary of terms

The table below lists some of the terms used on our website. Some terms have links to resources giving more detailed information.

10 Port USB hub A USB hub which allows 10 USB devices to connect to a single computer.
2.1Amp iPad charge / charger A charger which makes available 2.1 Amp suitable for charging the Apple iPad at its full rate. Our C3 products are designed for charging and sync of iPad devices (or iPod).
32 Port USB hub A USB hub which allows 32 USB devices to connect to a single computer. Our B2 product allows 32 devices to connect but it is not a hub, our B2 is only a USB charging product.
49 Port USB hub A 49 port USB hub which allows 49 USB devices to connect to a single computer, our A2, A4 and A6 series hubs for example.
Active USB extension cable An extension cable which can circumvent the cable length limitations of USB. Extenders can be optical or cabled. Each extender adds 1 to the cumulative 'hub depth' figure.
Bulk charger / charging The act of charging a large number of devices simultaneously. Our B2 32 port USB charging station offers this ability.
Bulk sync / synchronization The act of synchronizing a large number of devices simultaneously. This can be performed by our A2, A4 and A6 products.
C3-Case The Cambrionix C3-Case product is a 16 port iPad and iPod charging and sync component offering many options for customisation. See our product pages for more details on the C3-Case 16 port iPad and iPod carge and sync component. The C3-Case is designed as the main component in iPad and iPod cart and case products such as those used in schools and universities.
iPad Charging Cart (or case) A device which is designed to hold a number of iPad (or iPod devices within an easy to move/use 'cart'. our C3-Case product is designed to be the 'brains' behind charge and sync carts and cases.
Duplication / duplicator A device designed to replicate information from one source to a number of memory devices.
Duplication station A piece of hardware designed with duplication as its primary purpose.
ESD Protection Protection against harmful electro-static discharge (ESD). ESD can damage semiconductor devices beyond repair.
Flash drive An information storage device which uses non-volatile flash memory as the storage medium.
Hub depth limitation The USB specification dictates that you can only cascade 5 (five) USB hub devices (or extenders). Our A2, A4 and A6 products have a hub depth of 2 (two).
iPad An iPad is a tablet format device which can perform tasks similar to a standard laptop computer.
iPad Charger / charging An iPad charger is a device which can charge the iPad. Such a charger should make 2.1 Amps available to the iPad. Our C3-Case product is ideal for this application.
iPad sync This is the act of synchronising information between a computer and an iPad device.
iPad synch [Alternative reference] This is the act of synchronising information between a computer and an iPad device.
iPod sync This is the act of synchronising information between a computer and an iPod device.
iPod Touch The iPod touch is a device made by Apple Inc. The iPod has found many uses within education.
iPod Touch sync This is the act of synchronising information between a computer and an iPod Touch device.
Large scale charging The act of charging a large number of devices simultaneously. This can be performed by our A2, A4 and A6 products as well as our B2 32 port charging station
Large scale iPod sync The act of taking a single source of information and replicating / duplicating it onto a number of other iPod devices such that they all contain the same information. Large scale iPod and iPad sync can be performed with our A2, A4, A6 and our C3 products.
Mass charging / charger The act of charging a large number of devices simultaneously. A charger capable of charging a large number of devices simultaneously. See our B2 charging station for more details.
Mass duplication / copying A device designed to replicate information from one source onto a large number of memory devices.
MFi (Made For iPod) Being part of the MFi licensing program allows you to develop electronic accessories that connect to iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Licensed developers gain access to technical documentation, hardware components, technical support and certification logos.
Overcurrent protection Electronic circuit protection designed to stop a device taking too much current from a power source. Each of our products offers per-port current limiting.
Power supply A device designed to supply power to a product. For example, a device which converts a 240VAC line voltage to 5VDC to charge an iPod.
Protection plate A protection plate is a protective plate which guards the main product circuit board against damage. Some of our products are not supplied with protection plates (such as the C3-Case).
Rack mounting / enclosure A rack mounted hub is a hub which can be fitted to a sandard 19" rack enclosure or similar.
RS232 / RS-232 In telecommunications, RS-232 (Recommended Standard 232) is a standard for serial binary single-ended data and control signals. It is commonly used in computer serial ports.
USB Battery charger / charging A USB battery charger is a device which will charge devices which are designed to be charged via the USB port. our B2 32 Port USB Charging Station can charge 32 USB devices simultaneously.
USB Duplication / duplicator A device designed to replicate information from one source to a number of other, USB connected memory devices.
USB Extension cable An extension cable allows an existing USB cable or device to connect to it effectively increasing the cable length.
USB Hub A USB hub is a device which allows a number of USB devices to connect to a single computer. Our A2, A4 and A6 products are large USB hubs.
USB Tester A device which can perform a number of tests on a USB device to ensure compliance with the USB specification.
USB to serial converter A device which converts a USB port into a virtual COM port. A device such as the FT232 (from FTDI) is a USB to serial converter.
USB1.1 data rate Specified data rates of 1.5 Mbit/s (Low-Bandwidth) and 12 Mbit/s (Full-Bandwidth).
USB2.0 data rate Specified data rate of 480 Mbit/s (Hi-Speed) and backwards compatible with the lower data rate of USB1.1
USB3.0 data rate Specified data rate of 5.0 Gbit/s (SuperSpeed) and backwards compatible with the lower data rate of USB2.0
USB3.0 10 Port hub A USB hub which allows 10 USB3.0 devices to connect to a single computer. USB3.0 gives a 10x increase in speed over USB2.0.
USB3.0 16 Port hub A USB hub which allows 16 USB3.0 devices to connect to a single computer. USB3.0 gives a 10x increase in speed over USB2.0.
USB3.0 28 Port hub A USB hub which allows 28 USB3.0 devices to connect to a single computer. USB3.0 gives a 10x increase in speed over USB2.0.
USB3.0 Duplication station A piece of hardware designed with superfast USB duplication / replication as its primary purpose.
USB3.0 iPod sync station A device designed to allow super fast synchronisation of information on a large number of iPod devices.
