Challenges
Datamation Systems, Inc. has been providing security and device management, specialised workstation and document handling solutions since 1963.
The company has become a leader in the storage, security, charging and management of enterprise technology, especially mobile devices. Here, the business has been a pioneer and first to market with innovative mobile charge, sync and security solutions. The latest example of this is Datamation’s recently launched UniDock™ products which provide innovative, future-proof and confi gurable smart docks for iOS, Android or Windows smart phones.
It is part of Datamation’s business strategy to meet increasing competition from low-cost, but function-limited products. Datamation aims to differentiate its solutions and services by offering customers high-quality, reliable and feature-rich products. To develop the UniDock range, Datamation worked with its long-standing partner, Cambrionix, a UK-based business at the forefront of worldleading USB charge and sync technology innovation.
Solution
Jerry Raymond, President of Datamation, says, “We decided to build our new product range around the Cambrionix platform because we had experience working with the company and knew it well. But, in particular, it was because the markets and environments we serve need a professional, durable, reliable platform, and one that is flexible and can be adapted to changing market and user needs.”
Datamation has worked with Cambrionix for a number of years. As well as developing its own products and bespoke development for clients using Cambrionix technology, Datamation also distributes Cambrionix products through its online and reseller channels.
“Datamation has partnered with Cambrionix since the first iPads were launched and, while Cambrionix may not be the cheapest on the market, what’s important to us is the company’s support, willingness to develop new things and the fact that its technologies enable us to deliver real added value to the solutions we deliver to our customers,” says Raymond.
The Cambrionix products that Datamation uses include the ThunderSync2-16, PowerPad industrial managed range of USB hubs, and EtherSync USB-over-IP hubs, along with a series of OEM USB charge and sync boards. Datamation uses the Cambrionix ThunderSync for customers such as telecommunication businesses that need high-volume testing and data sync USB solutions.
“Cambrionix let us accelerate the speed with which we developed our UniDock products. We went from a scrap paper drawing to a working prototype in four months with first production a month or two later, which is really extraordinary. If we had to design and build, and then support the USB part, it would have been impossible to do on that time scale. Cambrionix’ support and its ongoing ability to maintain and evolve its technology and future-proof our products really provides added value.”
Benefits
Using Cambrionix solutions across its range of products and services has enabled Datamation to quickly gain expertise and knowledge of USB technology, letting it focus on its core knowledge of customer applications. This helps Datamation provide its customers with professional solutions that deliver durability, quality and high functionality, and bring these benefits to customers quickly.

Datamation has already launched its second generation UniDock product which has a 40-percent smaller footprint and offers up to 50 percent more capacity.
To help differentiate its products and add value to customers, Datamation has incorporated a number of key features in its products. For example, UniDock device slots are designed so that they can accommodate almost any mobile device, present and future, with little or no adjustment. This makes UniDock flexible and extends its life. The Cambrionix firmware and API lets Datamation focus on managing any type of device being charged and synced, as well as offering the ability to control the docking unit hardware.
Datamation is now starting to expand the scope of its UniDock product range to customers in healthcare, retail, airlines and sports events where thousands of devices need to be charged, updated and managed.
