Industry challenge

School districts running 1:1 student device programmes have to keep thousands of devices ready for class every day. Between students, classrooms, and school terms, every device must be wiped and restored to a known-good state with the latest curriculum and learning material added.

Doing this device by device does not scale for school IT teams that are often small relative to the size of the fleet they support. Without a way to restore and manage charging in bulk, routine device turnover becomes a full-time job for a team that also has to keep the rest of the district's technology running.

How we help

We supported a US public school district with the setup and management of its student devices with Cambrionix hardware. Combining this with Cambrionix Connect features such as the automated DFU restore mode and the Target Charge feature entirely changed the speed of managing device readiness across its fleet.

Across 4 hubs, the district's IT team completes nearly 300 restore and charging actions a month, keeping more than 3,600 devices moving between students, classrooms, and terms without hiring additional headcount over the holiday season.

Step-by-step solution

  1. Deploy Cambrionix hubs at device-turnover points across the district's IT operation
  2. Use Cambrionix Connect's DFU mode to restore devices to a known-good state between students, classrooms or terms, controlling this remotely to minimise travel between schools
  3. Apply Target Charge profiles through Connect so devices are held at a healthy charge level rather than left at 100 percent for extended periods, protecting battery life over the device's lifetime
  4. Build restore and charging into routine device check-in and check-out, so every device is ready before it's reissued
  5. Track device and hub activity through Connect as the fleet grows, to keep visibility over device readiness across the district.
